sapphic gothic romance that pulls you in
There is a almost poetic and immersive feel to the writing of the book, the descriptions that are provided and the amount of detail that some aspects of it. Overwhelming at times, but it paints a vivid picture of the world and what it going on. The characters are well developed, growing as the story progresses and the mystery unfolds. It plucks at your emotions, drawing you in and making you are. It is also dark and heavy at times, Mina and the Witch’s struggles very real.It is, though, a very enjoyable and engrossing book. I was hooked from the first chapter, pulled into the world and wanting to know what would happen, and how it would all end. The pain that they’d been through, the secrets that they held – how would that shape them in the end? Sure, it has those fairy tale trappings there – it advertised as such, but it takes them and makes them its own. And I was definitely satisfied with how it ended.

Good book.
I liked the plot since I read it. And honestly the writing was beautiful, one of my favorite things about this book. The one thing I kind of disliked was that the book kinda came with a little damage, but well.The characters were cool, specially The Witch. Mina sometimes got on my nerves and I was like “dude please tell your father how bad of a father he is” but it never happened, so that kind of dissapointed me. But aside from that, I liked her courage a lot, specially when she was dealing with The Witch.Also there’s this line The Witch says which I absolutely ADORED, I don’t even remember when it happened. I think they were talking about their deal and the witch asked Mina if she was mantaining her part of it and since Mina said yes, the witch replaid “Then my evenings are yours”.I was like 😍 what a beautiful thing to say. Also I’m a orchestra player myself, and when the author mentioned The Witch playing the viola (which is also the instrument I play) I was in complete shock! Normally people always uses violins or pianos, but viola? I was surprised! Loved that ❤️Anyways, the plot was very interesting, so catchy. And Mina and The Witch had an amazing chemistry and love for each other.Definitely be buying the special version also waiting for future sapphic books of this author ❤️

I absolutely love this book. I got done reading another book and was worried this one wouldn’t be as good. Well- I stand corrected because this book was definitely worth reading!! Such a cute story and it had one spicy scene that was a page long. So if you don’t really like too much spicy this book is for you! Btw it has a happy ending so if you were scared don’t be-

Well-written, slow-burn
I saw an ad on IG for this book and bought it. It was a great read, set in an earth-like world with magic and suspense. The growing relationship between characters is simmering and the twist was completely unexpected! What a great work from author, Samantha Shannon!

A love sapphic love story that makes you rethink loneliness
What would I not do, if it meant I could be loved?Do you ever connect with a book? I just had to give this book five stars, I have stuck little sticky markers on so many pages (over forty) that it resembles a hedgehog when that edge is showing.Bitterthorn is ultimately about loneliness, and how it changes us. But, also how love can change us. Because this is most definitely a love story too, however dark it can feel at times. And wow did I have all the feels!The main characters are Mina, the dukes daughter who has led a life where her parents have been absent from her life most of the time. So much so that she volunteers to be the companion the witch takes every fifty years from the region. Normally the witch takes a young man, and there has never been anyone who has volunteered to go with her. All the companions have never been seen again. The other main character is the witch…at least that’s what we know her as. She has secrets, and doesn’t interact much with Mina at first. In fact I think we learn a lot about Mina’s witch in small lines and actions throughout the story. Even though the story is from Mina’s point of view throughout.‘You would choose to stay?’ she asked, a tremor in her voice. ‘For me?’As a reader you really want to know what happened to each companion, although part of you knows it can’t be good. I was not prepared. I was so tense that over one hundred pages from the end I knew I wasn’t sleeping until I had finished. And what an ending! I’m not going to ruin it for you because it did surprise me, and I hope you get as much enjoyment over it as I did. I would also highly recommend taking the time to read the authors notes at the back of the book.You’ll enjoy this book if you like magic, intrigue, betrayal, a slow burn of epic love, and accurate mental health representation. If you feel lonely like I do, you’ll also felt seen.

4.5 starsI’m not sure that a first chapter has ever captured my attention so completely, or, if it’s happened before, it hasn’t happened in a long time. The way loneliness was described was so raw and gripping and heartbreaking. After just a chapter I already wanted to wrap Mina in a hug and tell her that everything was going to be okay. The atmosphere was perfectly sinister and magical and the plot was really interesting. There weren’t too many characters to care for save for Mina and the Witch, but that didn’t bother me since I really liked them. Their romance, which was a slow burn, was quite wonderful too.One of my top favourite fairy tales.

When the news comes that the Witch living above the city will come to claim another soul as her companion after fifty years, everyone is terrified. And when Mina is given the chance, she jumps to join the Witch before she is pushed into an even lonelier life. The Witch is unlike anyone Mina has ever known- haughty and aloof but also deeply vulnerable. Every companion she’s ever had has never returned, and yet the closer Mina tries to get to her, the further the Witch pulls away. Locked away in the castle with the Witch and surrounded by unspoken history, Mina soon begins to realise that there’s a longer, darker story at play- and that she’s falling in love with the Witch.Kat Dunn has written a deeply moving and bittersweet exploration of belonging and the importance of love, all wrapped up inside a deeply Gothic fairy tale. I loved it from the first line until the end, and I’ll definitely read it again.
